Review of War Museum Tour

by Bruce Meiklejohn

On Thursday June 2nd, the IES group met for our final lunch of the season at the scenic Mill Restaurant, followed by an informative tour of the new Canadian War Museum. The agenda featured presentations to two teams of Algonquin College Interior Design students who were recognized for their creative efforts on a luminaire design. Melina Craig, their instructor, awarded them prizes bestowed by Vincent Roy of Philips Lighting and our National Capital Section, and congratulated them. A door prize was awarded compliments of Waterman Sales. The winner, Michel Campbell graciously received the beautiful pen set. Very outgoing President, Bob Bridges, passed the torch to incoming President, Guy Brunet, with special words in closing.

Crossey Engineering led two groups on the tour throughout the Museum giving insight into rationale for certain decisions, as well as hidden meanings of various elements present in the building. For many tour-goers it was their first experience of this newly-opened building and the information imparted was integral to this experience. I’m sure all present departed with a strong sense of the intentions and resolutions of this building.

Many thanks to Crossey Engineering for their efforts and time, to Waterman Sales for their generous door prize contribution, and to Vincent Roy and Philips Lighting for their support of the Algonquin College lighting design award.

See you on the 23rd.

IES Centennial Committee
The IESNA turns 100 on January 10th 2006 and our section has been working at
ways in which to mark this important milestone while fulfilling the
Society's goal of community outreach. Centennial chair, Melina Craig and her
committee have been developing plans for several activities expected to take
place this winter and spring. Watch your IES newsletters for more details
about a Light Art Exhibition and Cocktail, and a Christmas Lighting Contest.
Your participation in centennial activities will help our section and the
Society strengthen its role as The Lighting Authority.

National Capital Section Lending Library
Once again, this year, the National Capital Section will be operating our lending library for IES members. There have been some new publications added to the collection, including the reference texts recommended for LC exam participants, as well as some updated RP's. The new publications are presently being catalogued before moving them to the library's location at Energy Ottawa's offices situated at 1145 Hunt Club Road, Suite 220. You can browse available titles by visiting ottawa.iesna.net/library.

IESNA Publications
The IESNA produces over 100 varied publications on various lighting topics. While the comprehensive "Lighting Handbook" may be the most well known and most often referred to of these publications, the series of Recommended Practices, Design Guides, and various technical publications can prove invaluable to someone working on a specific project and in need of additional guidance. IESNA publications are available individually for purchase through the society website located at www.iesna.org. If you are serious about lighting, then you may want to obtain the entire collection by upgrading your membership to a subscribing membership, or consider a sustaining membership for your company. Subscribing members receive the entire IES library with their first year's dues and receive updated publications automatically whenever they are first issued. Sustaining members also receive the entire library with updates as well as contribute to the ongoing activities of the Society. Either way, you will always be confident that you are referencing the most up-to-date information available. For more information about the different forms of membership, please visit http://www.iesna.org/membership/membership_info.cfm. Remember that prices that appear on the Society's web pages are stated in US dollars.

IIDA

The International Illumination Design Awards program of the IESNA provides a unique opportunity for public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity, and originality in lighting design. It is not a competition, but an awards program whose winners are selected according to how well the design meets specific criteria.

The National Capital section is pleased to announce that Gabriel/design has received an Award of Merit for the University of Ottawa SITE (School of Information Technology & Engineering) building. Philip Gabriel and Andrew Mackinnon are the designers on the award winning project. Congratulations to this Gabriel/design team! The award will be presented at the IESNA Centennial Conference in New York, January 8-10, 2006.

NCQLP
The 2005 NCQLP, LC examination is scheduled for Saturday November 5th. The application deadline for those interested in writing the LC exam this year is September 23rd. All information regarding this year's LC exam can be downloaded from http://www.ncqlp.org or you can contact Bob Bridges at 733-2500.

2005 Golf Tournament

Another terrific IES golf tournament was held on May 26th! Thanks to Nick Rivet for leading the organization of the event, and also to his dedicated committee, Guy Brunet & Scott Keefe. Thanks to all of our prize and hole sponsors for their generosity. Their support for the event helps make it a successful day.
