Hosting Information
Our site is hosted by Canadianwebsites.net. Interestingly, this
company is located in Australia with servers in New York City. This
web hosting provider was chosen by comparing several key hosting
features and prices along with tests of response times to technical
questions. Hosting costs are about $144.00 CDN year, and can be
paid by PAYPAL in Canadian dollars.
Hosting Features
Certain features were desired to accommodate the needs of the IES
Canadian Region Website. Specifically, they were
- subdomain support
- multiple FTP accounts (so that each section can have their own
login)
- email features including POP3 accounts, forwarders, autoresponders,
and webmail
- scripting support (including CGI, PHP, SSI)
- scalability - should the need arise, we can increase storage,
bandwidth, and other features as well
Contacting Technical Support
Technical Support can be contacted by email at info@canadianwebsites.net
Response times are generally within minutes up to a few hours depending
on time of day (Remember that support staff is in Australia, so
time zones are quite different. Answers are usually clear and indicate
a good understanding of the question.
Changing the Host
Should you, at any time need to move hosting to another provider,
there are a couple of key steps to follow.
- Find an acceptable provider at a cost you are happy with
- Make a full copy of the IES website using FTP and save this
mirror on your local computer.
- Sign up and pay for new hosting
- Login to the Network Solutions Website, Manage Account, and
make changes to the nameserver entries. You should obtain at least
two new entries from your new hosting provider. These are often
emailed to you or can be found on their website - often on the
FAQ section of the site.
- Once changed, it usually takes between 24 and 72 hours for browser
requests to be routed to the new address. Your host should provide
you with a means to access your webspace during this DNS propagation
period. You should upload the mirror image of your site that you
saved above to the new location. (Hint - Make some small change
to the homepage so that you can tell whether you are on the old
or new site when you browse to the site in Explorer.)
- Make sure any of your programs that access your sites files
(like FTP) have any new login information, passwords etc. so that
the can successfully login to the new site once it is live.
- After about 72 hours, cancel your old account, so that they
do not continue to bill you.
If you do the above correctly, none of your visitors will ever
notice that you have made a change.
